Your complete guide to smooth, comfortable results — from the experts at Viva Brazil San Diego
Getting a wax — especially a Brazilian wax — can feel a little intimidating if it’s your first time. The good news? With the right preparation, your experience can be far more comfortable, your results can last longer, and your skin will thank you for it. At Viva Brazil San Diego, we’ve been helping clients feel confident and silky smooth for over 20 years. As hard wax specialists, we know exactly what makes the difference between a great wax and a not-so-great one — and it starts long before you walk through our door.
Whether you’re coming in for a Brazilian wax or a full body waxing session, this guide covers everything you need to know to prepare your skin and get the most out of your appointment.
Why Preparation Matters
You might be wondering — does prep really make that much of a difference? The answer is a resounding yes. Proper preparation:
- Reduces discomfort during the service
- Helps the wax grip the hair more effectively
- Minimizes the risk of irritation, ingrown hairs, and breakouts
- Leads to longer-lasting, cleaner results
At Viva Brazil San Diego, we use hard wax exclusively for sensitive areas like the bikini zone and face. Unlike soft wax, hard wax wraps around the hair rather than adhering to the skin, making it significantly gentler and more effective — especially for a Brazilian wax. But even the best technique works better when your skin is ready.
How to Prepare for a Brazilian Wax
1. Let Your Hair Grow to the Right Length
This is the most important step. For the wax to grip properly, your hair needs to be at least 1/4 inch long — roughly the size of a grain of rice. If you’ve been shaving, plan to stop at least 2 to 3 weeks before your appointment. If your hair is too long (longer than 3/4 inch), don’t worry — we can trim it for you at the start of your session.
2. Exfoliate 24–48 Hours Before Your Appointment
Gently exfoliating the bikini area 1 to 2 days before your wax helps remove dead skin cells that can block hair follicles and make waxing less effective. Use a mild scrub or a soft exfoliating mitt — nothing too harsh on such a sensitive area. Avoid exfoliating the day of your appointment, as this can make skin more sensitive.
3. Moisturize Regularly — But Not on the Day Of
Hydrated skin makes for a smoother waxing experience. In the days leading up to your appointment, keep your skin well-moisturized with a fragrance-free lotion. However, skip the lotion on the actual day of your wax — moisturizer can create a barrier that prevents the wax from gripping the hair properly.
4. Wear Comfortable, Loose-Fitting Clothing
After a Brazilian wax, your skin will be freshly treated and a little sensitive. Skip tight jeans or synthetic fabrics on the day of your appointment and opt for loose, breathable cotton clothing instead. Your skin will feel much more comfortable on the ride home.
5. Take a Pain Reliever If Needed
If you’re concerned about sensitivity, it’s perfectly okay to take an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen about 30 minutes before your appointment. This can help take the edge off, especially for first-timers.
6. Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol Before Your Appointment
Both caffeine and alcohol can tighten pores and increase skin sensitivity. Try to skip your morning coffee or evening glass of wine before coming in for your Brazilian wax — your skin will be calmer and more receptive to the treatment.
7. Stay Away from Sun Exposure and Tanning
Sunburned or freshly tanned skin is far more sensitive. Avoid sunbathing, tanning beds, or self-tanner for at least 48 hours before your appointment.
